The Weeknd has urged major labels and streaming services “to go big and public” with donations to racial equality organisations.

The Canadian artist, real name Abel Makkonen Tesfaye, recently donated $500,000 to number of organisations, and has urged industry giants to follow in his footsteps by sharing donations with the public.

Taking to Twitter, the singer wrote: “To my fellow respected industry partners and execs — no one profits off of black music more than the labels and streaming services.

“I gave yesterday and I urge you to go big and public with yours this week. It would mean the world to me and the community if you can join us.”

The Weeknd posted an image alongside the tweet, featuring the logos of Apple Music, Sony Music, Spotify, Warner Music, and Universal Music Group.
