Spotify is launching its own awards show, logically titled The Spotify Awards, with the focus on Latin America’s huge music market.

The streaming giant has stated the aim is to offer a “true reflection of what fans are listening to”. The first ceremony will be held on 5th March 2020, in Mexico City โ€” currently a hotbed for cutting edge electronic music.

User plays, patterns and habits will be analysed to determine categories and the ultimate winners, making for one of the most technologically-advanced award systems in the music world. The event will also be broadcast online on the day through a partnership with Turner Latin America.

“Thanks to streaming and the true audience size of Mexico, users are in the front seat like never before,” said Mia Nygren, Spotify’s managing director for Latin America. “We decided to celebrate this by recognizing what users love based entirely on their listening. The Spotify Awards is all about this, giving everyone an opportunity to be part of the show.”

According to Spotify, Mexico City is home to the highest number of platform users anywhere in the world, hence choosing the location for this inaugural foray into red carpet territory. Naturally, a playlist has been compiled to mark the announcement, which we’ve embedded here.
